After spending five beautiful days in Malta, my husband and I were able to take out a full day to explore Gozo and I’m glad we did! This little island deserves all the praise in the world and I wish I could have stayed for longer.
Since we were time restricted, we decided to take a hop on hop off bus tour so we can see as much as possible. Here’s how our time in Gozo Malta planned out.

Why you should take a trip to Gozo
The island is much more calmer and peaceful in comparison to Malta itself. Life seems to almost stand still and the locals go at a very productive slow pace which makes the island perfect if you’re looking for something a little more mellow. When you’re in Malta, you’ll probably hear all the locals praise Gozo’s tranquil way of life and for good reason!
How to get to Gozo
You can take a ferry from Cirkewwa (including return) for between 4-5 euros and the journey takes no more than half an hour. Be sure to enjoy the views from the ferry, you may even catch a glimpse of Comino (which we were unable to go to due to unpredictable windy forecasts).
What to do in Gozo in a day
1. Visit Victoria (Rabat)
Also known and preferred by the locals as Rabat, the Arabic name, Victoria has got to be the busiest part of Gozo and even than there’s an element of peace in the air. We didn’t spend too long here but it’s worth some time to explore. There’s a shopping centre, cafes and restaurants here making it perfect for shopping, dining and walking around and watching local life.
2. Experience the beauty of Dwejra
Unfortunately we missed out on seeing the famous azure window in all it’s glory due to its collapse but don’t let this stop you. Dwejra is ridiculously breath taking! We were almost spellbound by the blueness of the water, the sounds of the waves crashing against the cliffs and rocky formations and the gorgeous views all around us.
We weren’t able to take any boat rides into the caves as it was too windy so make sure you plan in advance and keep checking the weather for any changes as there are no boat trip services available in hard weather conditions.
3. View the Basilica Ta' Pinu
Basilica Ta’ Pinu is a church and a national shrine and is just so pleasing to the eyes! We only made a quick stop here so we weren’t able to go in but just seeing the exterior was enough to satisfy me. The church stands magnificently alone against the blue sky and offers gorgeous views of its surroundings.
4. Enjoy an amazing trip to Xlendi
I don’t think there’s anything I can say about this place that will do it enough justice. Xlendi is STUNNING! It’s a beautiful little fishing village with the most beautiful views in town.
We had the most delicious meal at one of the restaurants which served up some amazing fish, we even had a visit from the local cat hanging about for some leftovers which was pretty cute.
Ohh and just for the record don’t have a palm-in-face moment like it. It’s not pronounced X-lendi, it’s Sh-lendi … you’re welcome.
5. Visit the famous Red Beach and Calypso cave
Our trip to the famous red beach was a major disappointment but mainly because it was unbearably windy! However the beach itself is pretty, not the best, but still interesting. Due to the weather being against us, we missed out on going to the Calypso cave so make sure you plan your day accordingly to really enjoy the beach’s beauty.
