Drink more water. You’ve most likely heard this a million times too much and it’s pretty much in every health and wellness tips, tricks and beyond! But drinking more water truly is the bare minimum and most essential health advise out there.
And rightly so!
We need constant and steady replenishment for pretty much every process in our bodies:
• lubricating joints
• maintaining healthy skin (hair and nails)
• restoring fluid loss
• regulating body temperature
• aiding in proper digestion
• clearing toxins from the body
The benefits are endless.
12 simple ways to drink more water daily even if you're not a fan
Clearly, drinking more water and staying hydrated is beneficial for optimal health. But we already know this.
The real problem is, for such a simple and important task, it’s extremely difficult and tedious to do (not to mention a little boring at times).
So here are 12 simple ways to drink more water when you don’t like it much (they’ll have you sipping it like it’s second nature!)
1. Flavour your water
If you’re not a big fan of plain (tasteless) water it can seem like agony drinking it! Flavouring your water adds a little excitement to entice you to drink more of it. I like to add powder enhancements like these EnergyFizz Sticks to make my water extra flavoursome. They’re super refreshing without any nasty artificial junk and give me that extra bit of energy I need to get me through (every) day. I call it a win win!
2. Try infused water
Try fruit infused water, because HELLO flavour and extra minerals and vitamins! Just choose from a combination of fresh fruits, veggies and herbs and add them to your water bottle. I highly recommend an infused water bottle as they keep the contents from floating around and make refilling water easier.
Experiment with different combinations and remember, the longer you leave them to infuse the more flavoursome the water will be.
Here are my favourite combinations:
• strawberry, blueberries, kiwi and mint
• watermelon and mint
• cucumber, raspberries and lime
• watermelon, rosemary and ginger
3. Set reminders
You need a friendly little reminder every so often to drink or take a sip of water and that’s okay! Because let’s be real, If you don’t like water, than your less likely to give it the time of day let alone remember to drink it. And if you’re busy, well drinking water is just a lost cause!
Try setting an alarm on your phone or smart watch for regular water breaks. If you’re feeling to go the extra mile, than the Ulla hydration reminder will get you drinking even more. This super cool, smart little device attaches to your bottle and automatically blinks when it’s time to take a sip or refill. Think of it as your new bestie, it just wants what’s best for you!
4. Set yourself goals
There’s nothing like personally challenging yourself to drink more water to give you a little nudge. Setting yourself a personal goal helps to keep you motivated and more determined to reach it.
Simply set your water goal each day, than own it and smash it! I love adding ‘drink 2 litres of water’ in my daily to do list on my phone, because there’s nothing more satisfying than ticking off an item on your to do list right?!
5. Get a marked water bottle
If you’re like me and do a little happy dance in your head when you visually see your efforts paying off, than a marked water bottle is for you.
They’re a fun and effective way to track your progress and encourage you to keep drinking more water throughout the day. Try this sleek water bottle or this motivational water bottle if you want a little cheerleader by your side.
6. Take sips throughout your daily routines
Make it a habit to sip throughout the day whilst going about your necessary daily routines. It can be before or after each meal, after brushing your teeth, after using the bathroom. Anything really!
Training yourself to take these sips will allow your brain to register that drinking water is also part of the daily cycle. Plus, it’s a good way to keep your mouth from getting too dry (which can also lead to bad breath … eek!)
7. Keep track of your water intake with an app
Apps are so 21st century and what better way to get (a little) excited but by tracking your water intake straight on your phone. Recording how many glasses or volume of water you have helps to encourage you to hit your personal goals.
Water apps send reminders and alerts based on your body numbers and goals, and some even offer little motivational phrases for an extra push. Try water tracking apps like Waterminder and Hydro Coach or free apps such as Aqualert or Daily Water.
8. Invest in a high-tech water bottle
Ever seen or heard of these high-tech water bottles before because let me tell you now, whoa! The HidrateSpark is a super nifty water bottle (ofcorse) that integrates with an accompanying tracking app (say what?!) to customise, notify and record your water intake. The bottom of the bottle also glows to let you know it’s time to drink (genius right?).
If you prioritise pure, clean and tasty drinking water than I can’t recommend the self cleaning LARQ water bottle enough! This insulated bottle has a built in UV-C Led light that turns on every 2 hours and eliminates 99% of contaminants from the water. Ohh yes please!
9. Eat your water
A great way to sneak some extra water into your body is eating foods that are high in water. Yes, literally eat your H2O! Experiment with obvious foods like watermelon, melons, cucumbers, lettuce and celery that are easy to add into your daily meals.
AndrRemember, eating your water shouldn’t actually replace drinking your water. Yes, these foods are high in water but they don’t compensate for it!
10. Refill your water bottle straightaway
When you start to see the last bit of water clinging on to dear life at the bottom of your bottle, fill it up straight away. No, don’t wait to do it in 10 minutes, because it’s likely you won’t (I’m guilty as charged!)
As soon as your water bottle is filled up, it’s like starting new and you’ll feel the push to carry on drinking till it empties again.
Also, make sure you always leave the house with a full bottle of water as it’s not always easy getting access to water straight away once you’re out.
11. Eat sugary or salty foods to induce you to drink more water
Drinking water after eating salty or sugary foods is the perfect opportunity to chug as much water as possible (willingly).
Salty foods tend to suck the moisture out from your mouth leaving it dry and dehydrated. As for sugary foods, they make you feel thirstier. The sugar enters your bloodstream and water moves out of your cells and into your blood to restore balance. Due to a lack of water in your cells, signals are sent to your brain to let it know they need more water.
Okay, so that’s enough of the science lesson but I feel I got the point across!
Sometimes I get smart and have a spoon of honey beforehand and it works a treat! I end up drinking almost 500ml of water in one go and the taste of it is just divine. Even a less healthier option like chocolate has the same effect so be sure to keep a hefty amount of water close by.
12. Drink water through a straw
I know it seems like it won’t help but I assure you drinking water through a straw means you end up sipping more in one go. Maybe it’s the physiology of pulling back your head to drink that stops us from taking a longer sip (don’t quote me on that), but it seems plausible right?
Try these cool reusable bamboo straws that are sturdier and better for the environment as an alternative to plastic straws.
BONUS - try a funky way to drink more water on the go
I don’t know if I’ve been hiding under a rock or something because I certainly did NOT get the memo about these water gadgets. I haven’t personally got any of these but I can only imagine they’d help someone drink a little more water, so hey, they’ve made it on the list!
The Asobu water bottle – a water bottle with an ACTUAL speaker that connects to your phone so you can have music on the go! I didn’t even believe such a thing was possible but there you go. You can take the Asobu anywhere, park, beach, gym and show it off to all your friends and family. It’ll definitely be a talking point. Rest assured though, it’s still a deserving water bottle with its double insulated walls so it’s perfect for both hot and cold beverages.
The Wetsleeve – okay now I’ve seen it all! Wear your water? Yes, it’s very much possible. The Wetsleeve is possibly the most easiest and creative way to drink more water whilst on the go. It attaches to your arm and makes for easy access so it’s the perfect companion for fitness related activities such as hiking to biking and everything in between.
Drinking water naturally is no easy task but it’s not impossible. Make it fun with these simple tips and you’ll be one step closer to achieving your water drinking goals every day.
I really enjoyed reading your article. I especially like the idea of infusing water with fruits and herbs. It’s a great way to make drinking water more enjoyable.
Thank you! Absolutely, it’s much more refreshing than store brought infused water too.
