It’s like a kiss from nature – a touch of self-care to help you unwind and destress in complete bliss.
Not too bad right?
And the health benefits? You’re about to find out …
What is eucalyptus?
Eucalyptus is a type of evergreen tree native to Australia. Its branches and round-shaped leaves have been used for centuries for their healing power and it’s no wonder! This little gift from nature goes above and beyond with it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.
Why you should hang eucalyptus in the shower
I’m a firm believer in the power of plants for your health and eucalyptus doesn’t disappoint!
Adding eucalyptus in the shower doesn’t just make your bathroom look ohh so pretty. The steam from your shower helps to loosen and activate eucalyptus oil molecules into the air.
Breathing in the earthy fragrance helps to promote relaxation and has a host of healing properties for your mind and body.
The health benefits of eucalyptus in the shower
Apart from being aesthetically pleasing and smelling absolutely amazing, inhaling eucalyptus in the shower comes with many health perks.
1. Helps to reduce stress
Feeling a little overwhelmed? Breathing in eucalyptus oil will help calm your nerves and get you feeling more zen! The sense of peace as well as the scent eucalyptus offers is enough to help manage stress and anxiety.
2. Clears your sinus (nasal congestion)
No one likes a stuffy nose and a steam infused eucalyptus shower is the stuff of miracles. I’m talking antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, it’s anti galore! Even 10 minutes is enough to clear your sinus, loosen mucus and relieve congestion, helping to treat colds and flus in the process. Breathing never felt so good!
3. Soothes and supports respiratory health
Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, eucalyptus helps to clear respiratory passages and decrease congestion. It’s truly THE perfect all natural vapour.
4. Great for pain relief
Eucalyptus oil as a natural pain killer might seem far fetched but I promise you, it’s no fad. In a study of patients undergoing knee surgery it showed inhaling the oil helped to reduce the feeling of pain. You can also try rubbing diluted eucalyptus oil on pressure points and muscle pain for instant relief.
5. Boosts clarity and alertness
Wave goodbye to a foggy and cluttered mind and say help to more focus and energy! Eucalyptus is the epitome of overall health. It increases oxygen flow which in turn stimulates the brain, soothes the nervous system and improves mental health. You’ll be stepping out the shower feeling awakened and refreshed in no time!
Where to find eucalyptus
You can buy fresh eucalyptus branches from your local florist or any store that does floral arrangements. Alternatively, Etsy have an amazing range of eucalyptus branch bundles and eucalyptus leave pouches which work just as well. Some are even combined with dried lavender so you can get an extra dose of TLC.
How to hang eucalyptus in the shower
This is super easy (even if your terrible at DIY!)
1. Simply gather some eucalyptus branches together and remove a few leaves on the end to create space on the stems for tying.
2. Tie them with a rubber band, thin rope or natural twine. You can also add a few other botanical herbs and florals like lavender to your bouquet because … it’s a spa haven right?!
3. Extra step: if needed, roll a rolling pin over the bouquet to help release the fragrance.
4. Next, securely tie or hang it on your shower head.
And that’s it. Pretty simply right?
Note: for best practice, make sure the eucalyptus isn’t directly under the water as this could irritate your skin and eyes.
How long does the eucalyptus last in the shower?
Fresh eucalyptus bundles can last for 2-5 weeks in the shower depending on the moisture in the room. Simply look out for tell-tale signs like the loss of its scent or the branches looking tired or browning. At this point it’s best to replace them with a fresh new batch!
To make your eucalyptus bundle last longer, florists suggest placing the bundle in water and trimming the stems to absorb more water. However, do not douse the whole bundle in water as this will make it lose its scent quicker!
Whether it’s for the health benefits or for its mesmerising scent, you can’t go wrong with having eucalyptus in your shower. It’s a luxurious and inexpensive way to take your bathroom to the next level and create a relaxing and uplifting atmosphere. Trust me on this one!
